NEW ORLEANS -- On April 9, 2014, vascular surgeons Taylor Smith and Charles Sternbergh successfully performed a complex minimally invasive endovascular aortic aneurysm repair – the first in the metropolitan New Orleans area.Because this patient’s aortic aneurysm extended to the kidney arteries, it was not possible to treat with a standard endovascular stent. Traditionally, these patients must undergo a high risk operation, or be denied treatment altogether.
A custom-made stent-graft with small holes (“fenestrations”) to accommodate the renal arteries was designed specifically for the patient. Under anesthesia, and with X-ray guidance, the device was placed using only a small needle stick in each groin. Ochsner Medical Center is the only hospital in the region to have access to the Cook Zenith Fenestrated endograft which significantly expands the ability to provide minimally invasive endovascular aortic repair to the community.
Ochsner’s section of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery provides cutting-edge treatment for patients with aortic and peripheral vascular disorders. Our physicians are nationally recognized for their development and use of new technologies and Ochsner was recently named #2 in the state of Louisiana for vascular surgery by CareChex ®, a division of COMPARION.
