NEW ORLEANS – The John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute (JOHVI) celebrated a number of accomplishments in 2017, including conducting its 950th heart transplant since performing the first heart transplant in the Gulf South in 1970. 950th Heart Transplant Performed
JOHVI performed its 950th heart transplant in November 2017 since performing the first in the Gulf South in 1970. JOHVI performs approximately 25 heart transplants annually, making it one of the most experienced heart transplant centers in the country.
100 Combined LVAD and Heart Transplants Performed in 2017
December 28, 2017 marked another significant milestone as JOHVI completed its 69th Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation. LVADs are devices that help advanced heart failure patients who can no longer rely on earlier stage treatment options. Combined with 31 heart transplants, JOVHI completed a total of 100 of the life-saving surgical procedures in 2017 alone.
First and Only Facility to Implant HeartMate 3™ LVAD in Louisiana and Mississippi
In October 2017, JOHVI became the first facility in Louisiana and Mississippi to implant the HeartMate 3™ LVAD. The device, which received FDA approval over the summer, is the latest LVAD design for patients awaiting transplant or experiencing advanced heart failure. The first patients included a 77-year-old and a 16-year-old. Both patients are home and recovering well.
JOHVI and Ochsner Health System received national recognition for cardiac care in 2017. Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans received a distinguished Five-Star Rating in Pacemaker Procedures from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Healthgrades also honored Ochsner Medical Center - Baton Rouge with a Five-Star Rating in Treatment of Heart Failure. Ochsner Hospital for Children was named one of the Top 50 Children’s Hospitals for Pediatric Cardiology and Heart Surgery in 2017-2018 by U.S. News and World Report.
