John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute Celebrates Year of Milestones and Innovation

NEW ORLEANS – The John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute (JOHVI) celebrated a number of accomplishments in 2017, including conducting its 950th heart transplant since performing the first heart transplant in the Gulf South in 1970. Below is a summary of JOHVI’s accolades and achievements from 2017.

950th Heart Transplant Performed

JOHVI performed its 950th heart transplant in November 2017 since performing the first in the Gulf South in 1970. JOHVI performs approximately 25 heart transplants annually, making it one of the most experienced heart transplant centers in the country.

100 Combined LVAD and Heart Transplants Performed in 2017

December 28, 2017 marked another significant milestone as JOHVI completed its 69th Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation. LVADs are devices that help advanced heart failure patients who can no longer rely on earlier stage treatment options. Combined with 31 heart transplants, JOVHI completed a total of 100 of the life-saving surgical procedures in 2017 alone.

First and Only Facility to Implant HeartMate 3™ LVAD in Louisiana and Mississippi

In October 2017, JOHVI became the first facility in Louisiana and Mississippi to implant the HeartMate 3™ LVAD. The device, which received FDA approval over the summer, is the latest LVAD design for patients awaiting transplant or experiencing advanced heart failure. The first patients included a 77-year-old and a 16-year-old. Both patients are home and recovering well.
