Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center Designated as Louisiana’s Only Center of Excellence by Hidden Scar
Hidden Scar is also available at Ochsner Baptist and Ochsner Medical Center - West Bank Campus
NEW ORLEANS – The Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center at Ochsner has been recognized by Hidden Scar™ as a designated Center of Excellence. The Hidden Scar approach to breast surgery offers patients the option of minimal scarring when undergoing a lumpectomy or mastectomy. By offering this procedure, the Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center, a part of the Ochsner Cancer Institute, is continuing in the health system’s commitment to bringing the most innovative procedures and therapies to cancer patients in the New Orleans area.
Hidden Scar Breast Cancer Surgery is an advanced approach to removing breast cancer. Hidden Scar certified surgeons place a patient’s incision in a location that is hard to see, so that the scar is not visible when the patient’s incision heals. As a result, patients have little-to-no visible reminder of the surgery or their cancer. Studies show that breast surgery scars significantly impact a woman’s psychological and emotional recovery and quality of life after surgery because scars can have a large impact on a woman’s self-confidence, intimacy, and body image.
Ochsner currently has four fellowship-trained surgical oncologists performing the Hidden Scar procedure; Aimee Mackey, MD, Amy Rivere, MD, George Fuhrman, MD and Ralph Corsetti, MD.
“By utilizing the Hidden Scar breast surgery technique, and leaving patients with minimal scarring, we hope to help them maintain or restore their self-image as they heal,” said Dr. Aimee Mackey, Breast Surgical Oncologist, Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center at Ochsner. “As a Hidden Scar Center of Excellence, we can now perform lumpectomies and mastectomies while maintaining excellent cosmetic results in reconstruction.”
“One emotional barrier that many breast cancer patients experience is the constant reminder of their disease that is provided by their scar from surgery,” said Dr. Amy Rivere, Breast Surgical Oncologist, Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center at Ochsner. “Being able to hide the incisions we make during surgery allows us to offer the patient minimal scarring and maintain as much of the breast and nipple as possible.”
The Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center at Ochsner Medical Center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. The Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center is the only breast cancer program in New Orleans accredited by the NAPBC.
The Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center is the leading destination for breast cancer treatment in the New Orleans area, performing hundreds of mastectomies annually and impacting over 1,000 patient lives per year.
