Ochsner Announces Jefferson Parish Medical Assistant Training Program

Enrollment for August 2019 session will open during information sessions on July 9; Jefferson Parish applicants required to attend a session

Ochsner Health System, Jefferson Parish American Job Center and Delgado Community College (DCC) announce plans for an Ochsner Medical Assistant (MA) Training Program in Jefferson Parish. The MA Now Program is tuition-free and open to Jefferson Parish residents ages 18 and older* through funding provided by the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA).

Originally launched in New Orleans in 2013, the six-month training program features accelerated classroom, clinical and on-the-job training, and addresses both the need for Certified MAs and to build additional career pathways. The program includes certification training for students in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Phlebotomy and EKG.

All interested applicants are required to attend one of two information sessions open to the public on Tuesday, July 9, 2019.

Applications for the MA Now Program are due by Friday, July 12, 2019 at 5 p.m. into the Jefferson Parish American Job Center - East: 1801 Airline Dr. Metairie, LA (504-838-5678) or Jefferson Parish American Job Center – West: 1900 Lafayette St, Suite 1, Gretna, LA (504-227-1283). The Jefferson Parish American Job Centers will also recruit applicants for clinical MA training, which will be held in the East Bank Council Chambers.

To be eligible to apply, the applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalency, successful completion of drug screen and criminal background check and ability to commit to the six-month program. After successfully completing the program and hiring requirements, 100 percent of graduates will have the opportunity to interview for positions as a full-time MA at one of Ochsner’s health centers or employed as a phlebotomist or EKG monitor.

According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical assistant is one of the nation's fastest growing careers, attributing to job growth across the country. In addition, MA is a position of strong need within Ochsner Health System.

Since its inception, more than 100 individuals have completed the MA Training Program, with 94 percent currently employed at Ochsner today. All Ochsner MAs also receive additional MA training after they are hired to further develop their skills and increase their scope of practice.
