Ochsner Health Celebrates the Year of the Nurse and Midwife with Employee Art Exhibit

NEW ORLEANS – In honor and gratitude of the contributions made by healthcare workers during the pandemic, Ochsner Health hosted an art exhibit at Ochsner Medical Center- New Orleans, celebrating artwork by employees across the health system.

The exhibit’s title celebrates the World Health Organization’s 2020-21 designation of the Year of the Nurse and Midwife that recognizes the impact of these professions on global health.

“With an emphasis on caring for caregivers, the art exhibit provided employees with a chance for reflection through artistic expression. It’s one of the many ways Ochsner promotes well-being and a healing environment for staff and patients,” said the creator of the exhibit, Maria Nix, MSN, BSN, RN, clinical educator in nursing professional development, Ochsner Health.

Employees from eight Ochsner campuses contributed to the exhibit, expressing themselves through a variety of artistic mediums including painting, sketching, photography and poetry.

The exhibit launched in July 2021 and the artwork was on display at Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans. The exhibit is available on digital displays at Ochsner campuses across the system and is shared in a virtual gallery with all Ochsner employees.

While the exhibit highlights employee artwork, two external artists also contributed works for the gallery. Artist Daymon Gardner of DearWorld.org partnered with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses to tell the stories of 40 nurses from COVID-19 units across the state of Louisiana through photography. His photos were featured in the exhibit. Ben Benson, the husband of a patient being treated at Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans, drew sketches of each nurse who cared for his wife. The sketches, entitled Hero Nurses, were also included in the exhibit.

"I started sketching to quell the boredom while at the hospital. But it became obvious to me that my sketches were more than just a way to pass the time. I was documenting something important as nurses and doctors were at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 to provide exceptional care for their patients." said Mr. Benson.
