BATON ROUGE – Ochsner Medical Center – Baton Rouge is one of two hospitals in Baton Rouge to achieve the Healthgrades 2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award. This designation recognizes superior performance in hospitals that have prevented the occurrence of serious, potentially avoidable complications for patients during hospital stays. Both Ochsner and Baton Rouge General (BRG) are among the top 10% of hospitals in the nation for their excellent performance as evaluated by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

This is the third year in row that Ochsner-Baton Rouge received this recognition.

On average, 270,457 patient safety events could have been avoided if all hospitals, as a group from 2012 from 2014, performed similarly to hospitals performing better than expected on each of 13 patient safety indicators evaluated by Healthgrades.

“This recognition affirms our commitment to providing the highest level of medical care across the Gulf South,” said Eric McMillen, CEO of Ochsner Medical Center – Baton Rouge. “Because of the dedication of our talented physicians, nurses and medical staff, Ochsner continues to be a healthcare leader our community needs.”

Patients treated in hospitals receiving Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award were, on average:

  • 40.2% less likely to experience an accidental puncture or laceration during a procedure, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
  • 44.2% less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
  • 54.4% less likely to experience catheter-related blood stream infections, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.
  • 50.4% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.[1]

During the study period (2012-2014), Healthgrades 2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient hospitals performed with excellence in providing safety for patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective outcomes (risk-adjusted patient safety indicator rates) for 13 patient safety indicators defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

Recently, Ochsner and Baton Rouge General’s parent company (General Health System) announced plans to partner to create the region’s highest quality, lowest cost healthcare delivery system. Both health systems share a like-minded approach to patient care and safety. In 2015, BRG and Ochsner were the only two hospitals in Baton Rouge to receive an ‘A’ for safety from the Leapfrog Group. Of the 2,530 hospitals in the country that were issued a Hospital Safety Score, only 773 earned an A.

Both hospitals have also been recognized by CareChex for medical excellence and overall medical care. In 2016, Ochsner Baton Rouge was named #1 in Louisiana for medical excellence, while Baton Rouge General was named #1 in Louisiana for overall medical care.

Ochsner was also recently named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Truven Health AnalyticsTM, a leading provider of data-driven analytics and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. Ochsner Baton Rouge is the only hospital in the state of Louisiana to receive the honor.
