Dr. Abushehab Joins Ochsner LSU Health as Neurosurgeon

SHREVEPORT, La. Ochsner LSU Health welcomes neurosurgeon Nimer Abushehab, MD, to its team. Dr. Abushehab specializes in cerebrovascular diseases and brings extensive expertise in skull base and cerebrovascular surgery, along with a strong background in neurosurgical research and innovation. 

 

At Ochsner LSU Health, Dr. Abushehab combines cutting-edge surgical care with innovation, research, and global health advocacy, striving to advance the field of neurosurgery while improving lives both locally and globally. His expertise is in treating cerebrovascular diseases such as brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), Moyamoya disease, and stroke. He also specializes in diseases of the skull base, such as complex brain tumors, microvascular decompression of trigeminal neuralgia – a chronic pain condition affecting the face – and hemifacial spasms along with other complex brain diseases.  

 

In addition to more than ten years of clinical experience, Dr. Abushehab is a prolific clinician-scientist with over 170 peer-reviewed publications, primarily focused on the treatment and outcomes of cerebrovascular disorders. His research interests include the optimization of surgical techniques for aneurysms and (AVMs), as well as bypass strategies for Moyamoya disease. He will bring his clinical and academic interests to the community as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at LSU Health Shreveport. 

 

Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Abushehab is the founder of My Right to Hear, the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to cochlear implants and hearing restoration worldwide. He is also the founder of the health tech startup MS Logger, which leverages artificial intelligence to predict patient outcomes based on surgical technique, aimed at improving personalized care and decision-making in neurosurgery. 

 

Dr. Abushehab is also an accomplished author. His book, Children in the Land of Hope, explores themes of resilience and optimism through the eyes of children facing adversity. The work has been praised for its heartfelt storytelling and its ability to inspire readers worldwide. 

 

Dr. Abushehab earned his medical degree from An-Najah National University, School of Medicine, in Nablus, Palestine. He completed his neurosurgery residency at LSU Health Shreveport. After his residency, Dr. Abushehab advanced his training through two prestigious fellowships in skull base and cerebrovascular surgery. The first was at LSU Health Shreveport, and the second was with world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Jacques Morcos at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas.
