BATON ROUGE, La. – In support of National Atrial Fibrillation, or “AFib,” Awareness Month, Ochsner will host Heart Health & Wellness Day, a no-cost event from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Livingston Parish Library Denham-Walker Branch, 8101 U.S. Highway 190, in Denham Springs. The event is open to the public.
AFib is an irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots, and it increases the risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related problems. Several conditions can raise the risk of developing AFib, including chronic kidney disease, COPD, diabetes, heart valve diseases, high blood pressure and hyperthyroidism.
Heart Health & Wellness Day is an informative and fun event that offers a variety of health checks and screenings:
• Blood pressure
• Body mass index
• Cholesterol
• EKG
• Glucose
• Lung cancer
Various community vendors will be onsite providing \resources and information. In addition, lunch will be provided, and attendees can hear a “Hello Health” presentation from Nicole May, NP, a nurse practitioner at Ochsner Health Center – O'Neal who specializes in cardiology. In addition to the risks of developing AFib and the symptoms to look for, May will offer tips for those diagnosed with AFib on preventing the condition from worsening.
“Heart health screenings are vital for detecting irregular heart rhythms before they lead to more severe complications,” May says. “The sooner we find AFib, the sooner we can help patients avoid problems like stroke and other heart diseases.”
Heart Health & Wellness Day is part of Ochsner’s mission of working with the communities it serves to build a healthier Louisiana.
