SHREVEPORT, La. – Ochsner LSU Health is now offering comprehensive breast care at its St. Mary Medical Center campus. The Breast Surgery Center opened in a newly renovated space this month, offering treatments for a variety of breast diseases. Additionally, the Department of Radiology at St. Mary Medical Center has recently been designated a Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center by the American College of Radiology® (ACR®), which certifies the facility has been evaluated by the ACR® and meets the highest standard of care.
Breast conditions treated at the Breast Surgery Center include breast cancer, breast pain, breast abscess and mastitis and nipple discharge. Additionally, the center offers testing and treatment for high-risk genetic mutations – such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 – and evaluates patients who may be at a higher risk for breast cancer due to family history.
“Quality care, comfort and convenience are the pillars of our patient-centered approach,” said breast surgeon Dr. Jane Sugar. “Our highly skilled team is dedicated to delivering comprehensive and empathetic care to all our patients. We strive to ensure your journey to wellness is supported with expertise and compassion.”
The care team at the center is multidisciplinary and committed to the whole health of each patient. In addition to breast cancer risk assessment and breast surgery, the Breast Surgery Center collaborates with experts to offer genetic counseling and testing, nutrition assistance, smoking cessation, weight management and reconstructive breast surgery.
As a Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center, breast radiologists at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – St. Mary Medical Center perform screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds and breast MRIs along with ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, stereotactic-guided breast biopsies and MRI-guided breast biopsies. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians and breast radiologists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
“I am immensely proud of our team for achieving this designation,” said Dr. Hugo Cuellar, Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Ochsner LSU Health. “This recognition underscores our relentless commitment to excellence, innovation and patient-centered care.
