Ochsner Medical Center Among Nation’s Top Oncology Programs

OMC – Jeff Hwy nationally recognized for its cancer treatment and research by Becker’s Hospital Review

The Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center at Ochsner Medical Center - Jefferson Highway (OMC - Jefferson Highway) was once again recently named to the 2018 Becker’s Hospital Review “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs” list. It was the only hospital in Louisiana to be recognized.

Becker’s Hospital Review features up-to-date business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems. The hospitals selected as great oncology programs are at the forefront of cancer treatment and research.

Since 1939, when Dr. Alton Ochsner made the connection between tobacco use and lung cancer, Ochsner Health(Ochsner) has been providing cancer care to patients across the region. Ochsner is currently implementing a system-wide plan to improve outcomes for cancer patients in Louisiana through increased education and prevention efforts, patient screenings and improved early detection across the community and region. As Ochsner cancer professionals continue to research and explore new ways to prevent the disease, the system’s goal is to increase cancer screenings in 2018 by 40,000, with 141,000 total additional cancer screenings by 2022.

Last fall, Ochsner officially broke ground on the multimillion dollar expansion of the Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center at OMC - Jefferson Highway. The $48 million addition, including a $20 million gift from the Bensons, will double the size of the Cancer Center, increasing capacity to offer more high-quality cancer services and advanced clinical research, making it one of the leading comprehensive destinations for cancer care across a multi-state region. The expansion is scheduled to be complete in early 2020.

Ochsner’s specialists treat more than 32,000 cancer patients annually, from all 50 states and 28 countries. In total, Ochsner has 11 cancer centers throughout the state and this year, it was recognized by the Quality Oncology Initiative Certification Program. Ochsner is committed to providing exceptional cancer care where its patients live, in large and small communities alike. One of its focus is delivering advanced technologies such as precision therapies, improved early tumor detection programs and early access to the most promising research and clinical trials to so that patients don’t have to leave the state for high quality cancer care. Ochsner Baton Rouge Cancer Center offers similar services to residents in its metro area, with many treatments available at local Ochsner clinics and complexes across Baton Rouge and at its new facility in Plaquemine.

“We are honored to be recognized among the nation’s best oncology programs,” said Dr. Brian Moore, Medical Director, Ochsner Cancer Institute. “Ochsner’s commitment to collaborative cancer care and a robust clinical research program, including the Precision Cancer Therapies Program, provide our patients with access to innovative therapies, cutting-edge drugs, anti-cancer agents and early-phase clinical trials.”
