Ochsner Medical Center - Hancock Receives 'A' Grade for Patient Safety

Ochsner Medical Center - Hancock was awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2018 Hospital Safety Grade. This designation recognizes efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the United States.

“These Leapfrog results are another example of our ongoing commitment to provide high-quality and safe patient care,” said Alan Hodges, CEO, OMC - Hancock. “Our physicians, nurses and staff are working together to improve patient outcomes and expand clinical service offerings for the residents of coastal Mississippi. I could not be prouder of the great work going on in our organization.”

This rating reflects the focus and commitment of the entire healthcare team and these achievements:

  • Four star ranking on Hospital Compare, part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Quality Initiative,
  • Improved HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) scores, the patient satisfaction survey required by CMS for hospitals in the United States,
  • Improved EDCAHPS (Emergency Department Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) scores, the survey for standard measurement of the emergency department patient experience from CMS; and
  • Implemented new Epic electronic medical record to create transparency and improved coordination of patient care throughout the hospital and clinic locations.

The Leapfrog Group is a national organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care.

“Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grades recognize hospitals that focus on advancing patient safety. This ranking provides an important resource for patients, and a benchmark for hospitals, to determine how care at one hospital compares to others in a region,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an A Hospital Safety Grade deserve to be recognized for their efforts in preventing medical harm and errors.”

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

Ochsner Health and Hancock County entered into a long-term lease agreement in April 2018 to operate Hancock Medical Center, expanding upon the strategic partnership the two organizations created in 2013. Now Ochsner Medical Center–Hancock, the hospital is expanding services and improving the quality and coordination of care, transforming the healthcare delivered to patients in the Gulf Coast region.
