St. Bernard Parish Hospital Honored Regionally with LAMMICO's 8th Annual Patient Safety Award and Grant

CHALMETTE, La. – St. Bernard Parish Hospital is proud to announce it is the recipient of the 8th Annual LAMMICO Patient Safety Award and Grant, highlighting Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) prevention.

“Working with the care team and staff at St. Bernard Parish Hospital is an honor. For St. Bernard Parish Hospital to be one of two hospitals within the 4-state region of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama recognized by LAMMICO and place first is impressive. By actively addressing the important issue of CLABSI prevention, St. Bernard Parish Hospital is setting a standard of patient safety and care of which to be proud,” said Lani Fast, chief executive officer, St. Bernard Parish Hospital.

All hospitals strive to prevent CLABSIs from occurring. These infections can lead to additional problems in patients that get them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and experts in infection prevention have outlined measures that can help to prevent CLABSIs based on medical studies.

By demonstrating the most effective methods employed to prevent CLABSIs after completing LAMMICO's risk management and patient safety education, St. Bernard Parish Hospital was awarded:

  • $10,000 grant to be used for nursing professional development
  • One-year risk manager membership to the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM)
  • One-year complimentary membership to Medical Interactive Community for all employees to access LAMMICO’s risk management CME/CNE/MOC courses online

“This marks the second time St. Bernard Parish Hospital has been awarded the Patient Safety Award and grant by LAMMICO. It is another example of how patient safety remains one of our core values. It also, emphasizes our quality of care provided at this facility,” said Katherine Baumgarten, MD, vice president of medical affairs, St. Bernard Parish Hospital.

“St. Bernard Parish Hospital receiving this recognition is a direct result of the care team’s continued commitment to providing exceptional care to the St. Bernard community. Preventing hospital acquired infection is challenging. The patient safety protocol followed at St. Bernard Parish Hospital is great for our residents of St. Bernard Parish. A big thanks to our providers and nurses that are keeping us safe while in their care,” said Ray Lauga, Jr., chairman, St. Bernard Parish Hospital Board.
