CHALMETTE, La.– St. Bernard Parish Hospital (SBPH) recently received recognition highlighting patient care and experience, including a “High Performing” in Procedure and Condition Award from U.S. News & World Report and inclusion to the 2023 edition of the “Great Community Hospitals” and “Top Hospitals for Patient Experience” lists by Becker's Hospital Review, a leading healthcare publication.
“Receiving this national recognition is a testament to our providers' and staff’s unwavering commitment to serving our community by delivering high quality care to patients,” said Lani Fast, chief executive officer, St. Bernard Parish Hospital. “In addition to the U.S. News recognition, we are extremely proud that St. Bernard Parish Hospital is one of 153 “Great Community Hospitals” and one of 277 hospitals in the nation included on the “Top Hospitals for Patient Experience” list by Becker’s Hospital Review, the leading publication for hospital business news.”
U.S. News & World Report issued the 2023-2024 Best Hospital rankings evaluating more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions. St. Bernard Parish Hospital was recognized for “High Performing” in Procedure and Condition for pneumonia. To evaluate how well hospitals performs in pneumonia, U.S. News utilizes data which entails nurse staffing and patient survival. According to U.S. News, hospitals earning a high performing rating were significantly better than the national average.
Becker’s Hospital Review “Great Community Hospitals" list celebrates hospitals' dedication to optimizing healthcare. Community hospitals on the list are known for clinical excellence, compassionate care, economic impact on their communities and more. These leading hospitals show above-and-beyond commitment to their communities and their expertise helps expand care access to patients who otherwise face barriers such as cost or distance. The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on analysis of ranking and award agencies, including U.S. News & World Report's 2022-23 rankings, Healthgrades, CMS star ratings, The Leapfrog Group safety grades, and The Chartis Center for Rural Health.
To comprise the list of “Top Hospitals for Patient Experience,” Becker’s Hospital Review utilized Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Hospitals featured on the list received a five-star rating, the average star rating of 10 topic-specific HCAHPS measures considered, including nurse and physician communication, care transitions and cleanliness.
St. Bernard Parish Hospital is the proud recipient of additional awards, including an ‘A’ Spring 2023 Hospital Safety Grade by The Leapfrog Group, 2022-2023 and 2020-2021 Louisiana Medical Mutual Insurance Company (LAMMICO) Patient Safety Award and Grant and the CareChex award for top 10 percent in the state for Medical Excellence in General Surgery and Orthopedic Care.
“Access to high-quality healthcare is vital to the community. This level of recognition shows the progress made in the way healthcare is delivered in this parish since partnering with Ochsner Health. This is a praiseworthy moment for every employee working at St. Bernard Parish Hospital, the Hospital Service District and the families living in St. Bernard,” said Ray Lauga, Jr., chairman, St. Bernard Parish Hospital Service District.
SBPH is owned by the Hospital Service District of the Parish of St. Bernard, State of Louisiana, a political subdivision of the State, and managed by Ochsner Health. Since November 2017 when the partnership with Ochsner Health was finalized, SBPH has increased specialty care offerings, significantly improved quality, implemented telehealth platforms and acted as a health and wellness community leader through numerous outreach programs.
