Blood test that detects over 50 types of cancer under review at Ochsner

New Orleans City Business | May 12, 2022

Ochsner Health doctors and researchers are studying a new blood test, the Galleri test, that can detect more than 50 types of cancer and allow for earlier treatment.

“We feel the Galleri test could be a real game changer because it could allow us to detect cancer earlier,” said Dr. Marc Matrana, director of the Precision Cancer Therapies (Phase I) Research Program at Ochsner. “In the treatment of cancer, we know that detecting cancer at earlier stages allows for more cures, and with multi-cancer detection tests like Galleri we estimate that we can reduce the number of stage 3 and stage 4 cancers by 60%, which could translate to upwards of almost 40% reduction in the five-year cancer death rate.”

Letters: Nurses change the world with their compassion

The Advocate | May 10, 2022

National Nurses Week is May 6 through May 12 — a time to celebrate the remarkable contributions of nurses. This milestone day was spent sitting by my mother, who was in a coma. Her illness was incurable, and I’d spent weeks grieving and waiting. Time felt like it stood still in that room, which is ironic as few experiences can make you grow up faster than losing someone.
