Maternal deaths in the U.S. spiked in 2021, CDC reports

In 2021, the U.S. had one of the worst rates of maternal mortality in the country's history, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report found that 1,205 people died of maternal causes in the U.S. in 2021. That represents a 40% increase from the previous year.

Ochsner Health takes DIY approach to health workforce shortages

When the nation’s health care organizations were scrambling to find personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ochsner Health came up with a sustainable solution.

The New Orleans-based health system partnered with a local company to start a PPE-manufacturing business, SafeSource Direct, to ensure that it had a reliable source of quality exam gloves, N95 respirators, hair-bouffant head covers and isolation gowns.

Ochsner Health is taking the same approach in addressing its shortages of physicians, nurses and other health professionals by partnering with local institutions to educate and train staff to build its workforce.

At Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center in New Orleans, it isn’t unusual to see patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer at increasingly younger ages. Although the disease still most commonly affects those over age 50, the numbers have been rising the fastest among a younger population across the world and doctors have treated cases in people as young as their 20s. The reasons for the rise remain unclear, although researchers are examining nutrition, lifestyle factors, genetic makeup, and other possible causes.

Louisiana physician developing new drug to treat pain — as safer alternative to opioids

Dr. Hernan Bazan, a physician at Ochsner Health who is also CEO and co-founder of South Rampart Pharma, Inc., was one of five researchers chosen from around the country for a National Institutes of Health award that aims to address addiction. The award, called Helping to End Addiction Long-term, or HEAL, Trailblazer Award, recognizes solutions to the opioid crisis. The drug is now ready for a Phase 2 trial.
