Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center offers new colorectal cancer treatments as rates rise among younger adults

At Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center in New Orleans, it isn’t unusual to see patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer at increasingly younger ages. Although the disease still most commonly affects those over age 50, the numbers have been rising the fastest among a younger population across the world and doctors have treated cases in people as young as their 20s. The reasons for the rise remain unclear, although researchers are examining nutrition, lifestyle factors, genetic makeup, and other possible causes.

Louisiana physician developing new drug to treat pain — as safer alternative to opioids

Dr. Hernan Bazan, a physician at Ochsner Health who is also CEO and co-founder of South Rampart Pharma, Inc., was one of five researchers chosen from around the country for a National Institutes of Health award that aims to address addiction. The award, called Helping to End Addiction Long-term, or HEAL, Trailblazer Award, recognizes solutions to the opioid crisis. The drug is now ready for a Phase 2 trial.
