Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Institute Celebrates 7000th Transplant

NEW ORLEANS – Earlier this month, Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Institute reached an exciting milestone by performing its 7,000th transplant.

The surgery was a joint effort by surgeons Emily Bugeaud, M.D. and Dennis Sonnier, M.D.

"This is a remarkable milestone for our program and organization. It represents 7,000 patients whose lives have been changed and saved,” said Nigel Girgrah, MD, PhD, Medical Director, Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Institute. “Transplant is truly a team initiative, and this speaks to the dedication of many talented individuals who collectively care for patients across our region and across the world with organ failure. We know the holidays can be a difficult time to lose a loved one. We are grateful for these life-saving gifts shared by generous donors that will increase the quality life for our patients."

Established in 1984, Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Institute has accomplished numerous “first” achievements including the first adult heart, pediatric heart and liver transplants in the Gulf South as well as the first double lung, kidney, liver and dual organ (kidney-pancreas) transplants in Louisiana.

Currently over 114,000 men, women and children are awaiting organ transplants to save their lives; more than 2,000 people are in Louisiana. To become a registered organ donor, visit www.ochsner.org/savenine.
