Ochsner, Elite Training Academy Create New BR Sports Complex

BATON ROUGE – Ochsner Baton Rouge has partnered with Elite Training Academy to create a new destination for comprehensive sports performance and care in Baton Rouge, combining the latest advancements in training, sports medicine, injury treatment and prevention, sports wellness and mental training.

Opening in 2023, near the corner of Lee Drive and Burbank Drive, this 65,000-square-foot facility represents a combined investment of $22 million. It will include a 60-yard indoor field, as well as two full-size outdoor turf sports fields which will serve as a hub for athletes of all ages, featuring an incredible array of services and offerings in one convenient location:

  • Orthopedic and sports medicine care from Ochsner physicians
  • Imaging services
  • Therapy treatments from certified orthopedic and sports physical therapy specialists
  • State-of-the-art equipment for biomechanics evaluations
  • Mental performance health coaching
  • Sports nutrition support
  • Sports performance training from athletic and personal trainers, as well as position-specific coaches
  • Speed and strength training
  • Recovery services, such as cryotherapy, massage therapy and acupuncture

Ochsner’s fellowship trained physicians – led by orthopedic surgeon and Medical Director of Sports Medicine Dr. Jeremy Burnham, and Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician Dr. Sean Bradley – will rotate at the new facility. The sports performance complex will serve athletes in the capital area with advanced procedures, including digital X-ray and musculoskeletal ultrasound, as well as 3D motion capture analysis and research-grade strength and movement assessment equipment.

This new super-location further expands Ochsner’s sports medicine expertise to local athletes. In 2021, Ochsner became the official medical provider and title sponsor for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. The comprehensive center will also take advantage of Ochsner’s partnership with world-renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in creating The Ochsner Andrews Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. Building on Ochsner’s award-winning sports medicine and orthopedic programs, Dr. Andrews brings his expertise, research and education platform to strengthen best-in-class care for patients and athletes across Louisiana and Mississippi.

Ochsner and Elite’s teams comprise experts in athletics, including physical therapists, performance training coaches, athletic trainers, personal trainers, position specific coaches, massage therapists, acupuncturists, wellness and mental performance coaching, sports nutrition, physicians and X-ray technicians. In addition to physician care, this complex will also house:

  • Ochsner Therapy & Wellness, using advanced techniques and leading-edge equipment to help patients of all ages progress with a physical therapy team, developing personalized recovery plans based on specific injuries, sports and activity levels.
  • Ochsner Performance Training, a college-style strength and conditioning program for athletes of all ages and sports with several locations in south Louisiana. Since opening in 2018, Ochsner Performance Training has instructed and coached more than 10,000 athletes and more than 200 teams.

  • Elite Training Academy, a locally owned sports training center, aims to positively impact the minds and bodies of athletes through physical training, wellness treatment, academic support and life skills preparation. Elite Training Academy provides sport-specific training, leagues, camps and clinics for field sports, working with athletes of all ages and skill levels.

In addition to Elite Training Academy’s expertise from former college and professional athletes, as well as athletic industry professionals, this comprehensive facility leverages the size and scope of Ochsner’s established therapy, performance training and orthopedics and sports medicine programs, coordinating them into patients’ comprehensive healthcare needs.

“This partnership enables us to bring together surgical, medical, rehabilitation and sports performance experts into a single facility,” Dr. Burnham says. “It will enhance the level of multi-disciplinary sports medicine and sports performance care for athletes of all levels in the Baton Rouge region.”

“Like any aspect of healthcare, access to advanced sports medicine treatments and therapies is critical to remaining physically active and living our best, healthiest lives,” says Diedra Dias, Chief Operating Officer, Health & Wellness Solutions. “In that regard, this new all-inclusive facility is a key component of Healthy State 2030, Ochsner’s pledge to help improve the health of all Louisiana residents by 2030.”

“With Ochsner sports medicine professionals working alongside our staff in the same facility, we can be more effective in teaching the most advanced, efficient and safe techniques. The ability to share information in real time makes this an advanced teaching and learning environment,” says Carlos Spaht, Elite Training Executive Attaché. “We believe this partnership opens a new chapter in keeping sports both fun and safe for athletes in the capital region.”

“This will be the premier sports training facility for the Baton Rouge region upon completion, and it shows the level of commitment Ochsner has with training our young athletes wholistically, with their health top of mind,” says Wayne Morris, Vice President at Ochsner Health.
