Ochsner Health Facilities Awarded Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification from The Joint Commission

Ochsner Medical Center and Ochsner Hospital for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care. Ochsner Medical Center and Ochsner Hospital for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine are the only two hospitals in Louisiana with this prestigious accreditation.

The certification, in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, focuses on the pre-surgical orthopedic consultation to the intraoperative, hospitalization or ambulatory surgical center admission, rehabilitation activities, and follow-up visit with the orthopedic surgeon.

Both Ochsner hospitals underwent rigorous onsite reviews on July 27, 2021. During the visits, a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with related certification standards including program management and delivering and facilitating clinical care. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend Ochsner for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for orthopedic patients.”

This new Joint Commission accreditation is the latest accolade for Ochsner’s orthopedic team which has also been nationally recognized as: High Performing for Hip Replacement and Knee Replacement by U.S. News & World Report in 2021-2022, recipient of Healthgrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award for six years in a row, Five-Star Recipient for Total Knee Replacement by Healthgrades for 12 years in a row and Five-Star Recipient for Total Hip Replacement by Healthgrades for 6 years in a row. In 2021, Ochsner was recognized as one of Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement.

“We are honored to be recognized by the Joint Commission, a global leader in driving quality improvement and patient safety,” said George Chimento, MD, System Chair of Orthopedic Surgery, Ochsner Health. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our orthopedic teams who put patients first every day, from the clinic to the operating room. Returning our patients to a life free of pain and renewed mobility is the ultimate reward.”
