3 Types of Startups that Healthcare Leaders Want to See More Of

MedCity News | Nov 19, 2024

Hundreds of digital health startups attended this year’s HLTH conference, which was held last week in Las Vegas. These companies were seeking venture capital, new customers and some fresh insight about the healthcare industry.

But exploring the exhibit hall revealed that many of them were promising to do the same thing. For example, it was easy to stumble across several startups hawking clinical documentation tools, several showcasing telehealth platforms for behavioral health, and several promoting their chronic disease management platforms. These areas seem overcrowded, but there are some areas of the digital health startup space that may be a bit too barren.

During the conference, I spoke with some investors and digital health executives about the types of startups that they haven’t encountered yet — but would like to.

A Leadership Blueprint for Measurably Better Care, With Beau Raymond, MD

Relentless Health Value | Nov 19, 2024

A rate critical to attain better care for patients, I’m gonna say, is enlightened leadership—maybe dyad leadership—at a clinical organization. I am saying this because without enlightened leaders, it’d be harder to build from the blueprint that Beau Raymond, MD, talks about today on the show.

Frailty scores predict outcomes in stroke patients after urgent carotid procedures, study shows

MSN | Nov 19, 2024

An innovative study by Dr. Hernan Bazan at Ochsner Health and colleagues reveals how frailty assessments can accurately predict outcomes in urgent carotid artery interventions for stroke patients.

The study, "Frailty Scores Impact the Outcomes of Urgent Carotid Interventions in Acute Stroke Patients" published in The Journal of Vascular Surgery, analyzed 307 patients over eight years and found that higher frailty scores were directly associated with increased rates of stroke, death, and myocardial infarction (MI) within 30 days of the carotid procedure.

In burnout battle, it’s on leaders to show how teamwork matters

American Medical Association | Nov 19, 2024

Winning the battle against physician burnout requires more than just awareness, say leaders at Ochsner Health in New Orleans. It requires broad collaboration and a multifaceted approach.

“Workforce well-being is a team sport,” said Nigel Girgrah, MD, PhD, chief wellness officer and medical director of liver transplantation for Ochsner Medical Center. “The idea that … a team of seven or eight FTEs [full-time equivalent staffers] is going to move the needle by themselves on the occupational well-being of 40,000 employees is fantasy, really, and so collaboration is crucial.”

At Ochsner Health, chief residents help interns master the EHR

American Medical Association | Nov 19, 2024

For resident physicians regularly logging 60-hour weeks, time is a precious commodity—and the EHR can be a major drain on it.

“Residents are pulled in a lot of different directions,” said Sydney Graham, MD, a chief ob-gyn resident at Ochsner Health. “We don't have a lot of time. We're putting in a lot of long hours. You can get really bogged down in documentation and spend most of your time worrying about the EHR, and how to manage your workload, versus being able to spend it on patient care.”

New data reveals BD’s Artificial Intelligence Software can detect indicators of controlled substance diversion

The Journal of Healthcare Contracting | Nov 19, 2024

BD announced new data that highlights how its advanced artificial intelligence technology can help health systems better identify incidents of controlled substance diversion in the operating room.

A new research study conducted at an Ochsner Health medical center and published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (AJHP) shows how the use of artificial intelligence in BD HealthSightTM Diversion Management software can help highlight blind spots about the movement of medication in the operating room that are undetected by current manual processes.
